Today’s interview is with Chris Seper, CEO of MedCity Media. Chris provides executive leadership and content for MedCityNews.com, one of the fastest-growing sites in healthcare and life sciences.MedCity News is a top online destination covering the business of healthcare and life science for decision makers in the healthcare industry. The site provides breaking news, expert insights, and analysis on startups and established industry leaders, personalities, policies and the most important deals.Newstex: How did you get started writing your current blog?Chris Seper: I was a journalist working at the daily paper in Cleveland and realized that the healthcare/life science sectors didn't have its own version of TechCrunch or VentureBeat. I saw the opportunity, asked for a buyout and launched the site.Newstex: What makes your blog unique?

Chris Seper: MedCity is one of the few places online where you write about innovation for the entire healthcare ecosystem - hospitals, pharma, payers, medical devices, digital health, entrepreneurship, and beyond. We provide a unique point of view, information you can't get anywhere else, and additional B2B insight.Newstex: To what do you attribute your blog's success?Chris Seper: We've been able to take an approach found on the tech, politics and BusinessInsider-like blogs and bring it to healthcare. And we've coupled that with original reporting that no one else can find.Newstex: What are the top 3 tips you can give to bloggers looking to develop successful blogs?Chris Seper:

  1. Find an unmet need. What isn't being done or said for a community?
  2. Think of every article like a job a reader is hiring you to do. What job do you do for your reader after they're finished reading?
  3. View the subject you're writing about and the people in it like a community.

Newstex: What is the best thing that has happened to you as a result of your work on your blog?Chris Seper: It's been painful and amazing to build a business from the idea to where it is today. Leading the business has been the best thing.Newstex: What inspires you to keep blogging?Chris Seper: I'm a media person at heart. And delivering information that uniquely matters to my audience is endlessly rewarding and endlessly challenging. I close my eyes, think of my audience and see a human being. And my team and I are constantly challenged - as if we're pursuing a long-term relationship - to find the things that touch, empower, anger, titillate and excite our readers.Newstex: At what point did you decide to syndicate your blog with Newstex and why? What do you think are the benefits of syndicating your content through Newtsex?Chris Seper: Good media companies today monetize their audience and their content every way they can. Newstex is part of the future of media. It allows me to resell my content to other publishers and proliferate my content to a broader audience (which means greater influence).Newstex: What's next for you and your blog?Chris Seper: We are in the midst of a dramatic expansion of our mission. Our readership and influence have grown that it's brought new opportunities and new demands from our readers. We're changing the site, adding new events and expanding our content.
